Franklin Half Dollar

Design Details

Design Details: The Franklin Half Dollar broke new ground in American coin design by featuring a Founding Father who was never a president Benjamin Franklin on the obverse. Designed by John R. Sinnock, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, the coin presents a right-facing portrait of Franklin that is both stately and understated. The inscription "LIBERTY" appears prominently above his head, while "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the minting year are placed at the bottom of the obverse in a no-frills, straightforward layout. The reverse side showcases the Liberty Bell, a bold and distinctly American symbol of independence, complete with its famous crack rendered in raised detail. To its right, a small eagle sits a legal requirement for half dollar designs under U.S. law. The reverse has become beloved among collectors for its symbolism and historical significance. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOLLAR" encircle the design, while "E PLURIBUS UNUM" appears above the bell.

Investment & Legacy

Investment and Legacy: The Franklin Half Dollar has carved out a respected place in both the collector and investor communities. Its 90% silver content gives it inherent bullion value, making it a solid foundation for those building a precious metals portfolio. However, it is the numismatic appeal that sets the series apart. With a relatively limited number of years and mints, assembling a full set is an achievable and rewarding goal for both novice and experienced collectors.
